Frequently Asked Questions

What is provided by Southern Star?

  • All rods, reels, bait and terminal tackle (hooks, weights, lures, etc.)

  • Fishing license for all passengers

  • Life vests and other safety equipment

  • Ice for your food/drinks and your catch

What should I bring or NOT bring onboard with me?

Dry storage is somewhat limited onboard, so please no beach bag. You can bring your personal effects and a towel or two, but it’s unlikely you’ll get wet. While our built-in cooler holds quite a bit, you’re may need a soft-side cooler if you’ve packed a lot of food and drinks.

  • DO bring a cooler to take home your catch, but leave it in the car. We’ll fillet and bag your fish at the dock.

  • DO bring food, drinks, sunscreen (lotion - not spray), hat, sunglasses, Rx’s, seasick medicine as needed

  • DON’T Bring: Drugs (even medicinal marijuana), weapons, glass bottles, spray sunscreen, large / hard-side coolers

What type of fishing will we do?

You will be primarily bottom fishing and we may do some light trolling depending on the time of year.

What type of fish do you catch most often?

Grouper - black, red, gag, scamp, graysby; Snapper - red, vermillion, mangrove, mutton, yellowtail; Triggerfish; Porgies; Kingfish; Blackfin Tuna; Black Sea Bass; Mahi-Mahi; Cobia; Amberjacks; African Pompano

Can I bring my own rod & reel?

Of course, you are welcome to bring your own. Please let the captain know if you plan to bring more than one or two, so we don’t end up with too many rods onboard. We bring a good number of rods & reels on our trips to target all the different species listed above.

Can we bring alcohol on the boat?

Yes, of course but only cans or plastic bottles - no glass. Also keep in mind that you don’t want to be dehydrated out in the hot FL sun, so we recommend you bring plenty of water or gatorade and not just beer.
